Somerville Local First Prom Fundraiser
Every Thursday night in the 80s, after my dad picked me and my siblings up from school in Lexington to spend the weekend with him up on Spring Hill, we would stop for fettucine alfredo at Mike’s or Happy Meals & the underground playground at McDonald’s (now the Starbucks) in Davis Square. I packed my Walkman and mix tapes full of songs my friends & I had recorded from the radio, my reversible sweatshirt, jelly shoes, puffy-painted Keds, jean jacket full of band pins from my cousin Sylvia, and Skidz overalls (one leg up, opposite shoulder strap off) with pockets full of Fortune Tellers and notes about crushes passed in class. Plus, at Dad’s house, we got to eat sugar cereal, listen to tapes with Explicit Lyrics, and watch all the MTV we wanted. Life was good.
This week, I got to literally take a walk down memory lane with Somerville Beat, and Somerville Local First as we took over the window display at the Goodwill in Davis Square to get people psyched up for tomorrow night’s 80s Prom at the Greek Orthodox Church. (We even made several upcycled DIY pieces for the window — stay tuned for those project posts over on DIY Boston tomorrow!)
Take this coupon for 20% off at Goodwill and get decked out in your best 80s look to help raise money for SLF and keep Somerville independent. Tickets are $30 ($40 at the door) and include 80s cocktails created by Daddy Jones, and nosh from tastemakers like Food for the Band and Union Square Donuts! It’s going to be the event of the summer, where a Local King and Queen of Somerville will be named, and you won’t want to miss it.
