Much like many of you, I’m sure, my house is a frenzy of last-minute planning and packing this week, getting ready for the holiday weekend and our first big trip of the summer. My husband and I are flying home to Boston on Thursday night and speeding directly from Logan to the Cape, excited to spend the 4th of July with family on the beach, followed by a few days back in the city before heading to Manhattan for the wedding of an old friend (and one of our own groomsmen!) Like any good trip, it’s going to be fast and furious but filled with quality time with our favorite people, places, things, and traditions. Man oh man, do I miss the ocean with every fiber of my being. Seriously counting the minutes until my bare feet touch sand. Anyone else?
Which is why I’m stoked to join my fellow FlipKey travel experts and other Northeast bloggers for a Summer Twitter Chat later today! I’ll be sharing more about all my favorite New England summer escapes from the @Shoestring Twitter feed and we’ll also be chatting about favorite summer travel destinations all around the world. Do you visit the same place every time or are there some bucket list destinations you’d love to tackle this year? Where are you headed and what’s your best summer travel advice?
Join us on Twitter today (6/30/15) from 3 to 3:30 p.m. EST and follow the hashtag #FKSummer to add your best tips to the mix! If you, like me, find Twitter to be a little overwhelming during live chats, check out this sweet Twubs page that the FlipKey team put together — much easier to refresh & follow along!
There are also some awesome travel guides on FlipKey (including a few Boston and Austin guides to gluten-free dining and vintage/secondhand shopping written by me) and brand-new travel guides using Google Earth for a 360-degree interactive experience, like this one for Cape Cod.
To prepare for this epic summer Travel Tuesday, follow a few of my favorite co-hosts ahead of time (and for great tips all year long): @BostonMamas, @SmarterTravel, @FlipKey of course, and @FingerLakesNY, somewhere we’re DYING to finally take a trip ourselves, especially since learning a few years ago that one of our dear friends has a family winery there. HELLO.
In the meantime, here are some of my favorite travel stories & tips from Shoestring issues in summers past:
Going car-free to Cape Cod from Boston by riding the new Cape Flyer train
There’s Always Money in the Lemonade Stand to pad your vacation fund if your budget is tight. Side hustle!!
One of my favorite stories we’ve ever published, my sister wrote this awesome guide to pretending like you’re taking your dream vacation, and preparing for it eventually all at once, with this 7-Day Argentinean Staycation Planner.
Planning a good ol’ fashioned road trip this year? Check out these guides to Pennsylvania & Tennessee from our cross-country move from Boston to Austin, plus my local’s guide to Cambridge and other native know-how from my friends Carla in Nashville, Kaarin in DC, Nicole in Orange County, and (cheap happy hour queen!) Colleen on the Maine Seacoast.
