Narragansett's 3rd Annual Tie Design Contest

January 20, 2010 - 1:15pm

You don't have to be from New England to enjoy the traditional (and, in my humble opinion, best in the bargain class) pale ale taste of a Narragansett "tall boy." Beer snobs say what you will, but Narragansett is not only experiencing a major resurgence in popularity with the hipsters (so hold on to your cans, Pabst Blue Ribbon), it's also popular with longtime supporters for its annual, collectible silk ties and authentically retro designs.

Now through January 22nd, aspiring designers can get in on the action by submitting a take on this tradition in the 3rd Annual Narragansett Tie Design Contest. Bragging rights aside, the cash prizes make it worth the while: first place is $300; second place prize is $200; third place prize is $100; plus all finalists (21 or older, of course) will receive a free case of Narragansett beer for their efforts. For full contest details and designer specs, or to purchase one of last year's Narragansett silk ties ($15), check out NarragansettBeer.com.

Not a designer? Me neither. But I am a huge fan of the traditional rebus puzzle 'Gansett coasters ($3 per 6-pack). Trying to get your friends to figure one out after a few Narry tall boys? Priceless.

Melissa Massello was born to helm a publication devoted to resourcefulness, the look for less, and attainable, affordable luxuries. As the oldest of three kids, daughter of divorcees, former competitive figure skater (who designed and sewed her own costumes — one of many crafts with mom), and frugal New Englander to the core, Melissa learned early on that smart spending, bag lunches, and bargain basements are the keys to unlocking The Good Life — regardless of your station, salary, creed, or credit score. Her earliest and fondest memories are of yard-saling with her grandma, organic farming on her grandpa's Washington apple orchard, and all-around sponging up the plentiful Depression-era wisdom from her gregarious Greatest (and first-) Generation Italian-American family. After studying journalism and working at five start-ups in seven years, Melissa decided it was time to take a walk in her dad's tech-obsessed shoes and share the bargain karma online.
