When it came to creating a clever Oscars-themed cocktail menu for our 1st Annual OscarUp viewing party and Tweetup, there really was no one better than master mixologist Somer Perez, guest judge on Bartender Wars and owner of Couture Cocktail Concepts in NYC.
Even if you're watching the Oscars at home on your couch, with or without a gaggle of snarky pals at your side, we suggest toasting to another year in pop culture with one of these Best Picture nominee-themed concoctions — each of which Perez created to be cost-effective and to reduce bar waste.
THE RIND SIDE
A fresh kick from the field with muddled lemon, lime, and orange peels strained and shaken with grapefruit juice, white rum & simple syrup. Topped with club soda. "This is what we do with all of those extra rinds of fruit after using the juice — a good cost-saving measure!" Perez said.
In a mixing glass, muddle the rinds with the simple syrup. Add all ingredients, other than the club soda, and shake. Strain into a highball glass filled with ice and top with club soda. Garnish with a lemon peel.
Go true blue Na'vi with a refreshing blend of POM Blueberry Wonderful, lemon juice, silver tequila and elderflower liqueur. Rim with blue sugar.
Rim with blue sugar, found at any cake/pastry store. In a mixing glass, combine all ingredients and shake. Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice and rimmed with the sugar.
A sweet and sour dose of whimsy, blending lemon and white cranberry juices with vodka, triple sec & simple syrup. Topped with frozen red cranberries that float up and up.
In a mixing glass, combine all ingredients and shake. Strain into a martini glass and drop in 3-5 of the frozen cranberries. The frozen cranberries will bounce and float — like balloons.
