5 Thrifty Things: Matryoshka Russian Nesting Dolls

by Melissa Massello, Shoestring Magazine
December 18, 2009 - 8:18pm

Apparently, the hipsters and tastemakers took last year's nesting trend quite literally when they brought back the Matryoshka, otherwise known as Russian nesting dolls. Seemingly overnight, homages to nesting dolls are stacking up everywhere, from vodka to key covers and everywhere in between. And when an icon or idea re-emerges in design, it goes from 0 to 60 pretty quickly — great news for bargainistas, because all that competition creates some incredible buys.

Here are five of Shoestring's favorites, ranging in price from under one to just over two Jacksons:

Matryoshka pepper mill, $42, (ShopPlasticland.com)

"M-Cups" Matryoshka measuring cup set, $13 (Elsewares.com)

Babushka 1GB USB flash drive, $24 (ModernTribe.com)

Set of 4 Nesting Russian Doll Plates, $30 (FredFlare.com)

Matrioshka Cranberry Vodka, $24 (ProWoodUSA.com)

What are your favorite, affordable Matryoshka (Russian nesting doll) products? Would you give one as a gift this year?

Melissa Massello was born to helm a publication devoted to resourcefulness, the look for less, and attainable, affordable luxuries. As the oldest of three kids, daughter of divorcees, former competitive figure skater (who designed and sewed her own costumes — one of many crafts with mom), and frugal New Englander to the core, Melissa learned early on that smart spending, bag lunches, and bargain basements are the keys to unlocking The Good Life — regardless of your station, salary, creed, or credit score. Her earliest and fondest memories are of yard-saling with her grandma, organic farming on her grandpa's Washington apple orchard, and all-around sponging up the plentiful Depression-era wisdom from her gregarious Greatest (and first-) Generation Italian-American family. After studying journalism and working at five start-ups in seven years, Melissa decided it was time to take a walk in her dad's tech-obsessed shoes and share the bargain karma online.
