My mama raised us with one golden rule: Never pay retail. (I have just as many fond childhood memories from the sale racks at TJ Maxx as I do from our family home.)

But I also learned early on that just because something is on sale doesn't necessarily make it a good score, or a good new addition to your wardrobe. Knowing what to shop for and when is the secret to nabbing killer savings. A bargain that you don't need is just a waste of money and precious closet space.
